What we Consider a Cure to Autism!

Let me clear up a few things right from the start. Sure, we would like to see a cure for Autism in the traditional sense of the word, a magic pill or combination of medicines that can reverse the effects of Autism or prevent it from happening in the first place. With that said, what we consider a cure for Autism right now is better education for Autistic's. We need better therapy and understanding of Autism. Those who are Autistic, are the ones that can give us the most insight into better ways of communication. It seems there are a few different stands on Autism. There are the adults with Autism who are higher functioning that think Autism is fine and are outright offended by the thought of a cure or end to Autism. Then there are the parents of small children who have Autism. They want their children to be able to grow, learn and play like other children. They want their babies to grow up and have a quality of life equal to or better than their own. They want to understand and help their children. They want a cure for Autism. They want appropriate treatments and therapy for their children. Then there are those that do not know about or understand Autism. They either do not care or do not think Autism is their problem.

I have Learning disabilities and ADD. My husband has Bipolar and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. We are good people and despite our own problems, we do the best we can for our children. Growing up we experienced what it was like to be different. In our town there is not a support group for Autism. There is not much Autism specific curriculum in our school's special education system. This is what needs cured. The therapies that are available out there that really work to improve the quality of life for Autistic people should be available to everyone, everywhere. ABA for instance is only available to the rich who can afford it. Developmental, Occupational and Speech Therapy are only affordable if you have enough money to pay for it or are poor and on Medicaid. A family should not have to be rich, dirt poor or become poor to treat and care for their child. There needs to be a middle ground here that delivers therapy through the schools or Early Intervention that is universally available to everyone. There needs to be laws passed to force insurance companies to pay for some of the cost of therapies. Autism has become an epidemic and it appears to be getting worse. Sure not all Autistic people are severely disabled, very few Autistic's’ are like Rainman (Autistic Savants). Let’s all stand together and fight for the rights of the disabled. Let’s make it be known that we are out here and we are struggling. Let’s spread the awareness of Autism and let’s help each other out. Autism Awareness is the start of the great journey we face ahead. It is the foundation for understanding, acceptance and improvement of the situation we are in. Awareness, like knowledge is useless unless it is used. Change starts with one person then two and so on. They say Autism is a mysterious puzzle, well I say we are all a piece of that puzzle and if it is going to be solved then we all do our part.

Attention parents do not spend all of your money on the cures, special diets or medicines that are advertised all over. Don't let your desperation get the best of you. Autism is still not fully understood, there is not a medical detection or diagnosis for Autism. Special diets, special combinations of medications etc... only work for a percentage of Autistic people, a small percentage. Those that claim 100% reversal are not being truthful or were misdiagnosed with Autism. I agree that vaccines as well as hotdog's for that matter contain all kinds of gross items. I agree they should be better designed and administered in a different way. Vaccines are not the cause of Autism. There is no cure for Autism. Mainstream science needs to research and either verify or debunk the constant so called cures for Autism. There is plenty of research being done that will eventually figure out the multiple causes of Autism. That is great, but there is a major lack of funding or support for the therapies and education needed by those with Autism now. There is a lack of support or recognition of the adults with Autism. Remember your little one will be an adult one day and either you will have to support them or they will have to go to some group home. However, if they receive the proper education and support they could be living on their own. We would like to see these issues addressed this is the cure for Autism. You should know now what needs to be done so now let’s complete this puzzle known as Autism!
